R.I.P President Kenneth Kaunda, Pan-Africanist and Zambia’s founding father who died aged 97. In the picture: Robert Mugabe, Julius Nyerere and Kenneth Kaunda, each of whom played a direct and pivotal role in our liberation, long before “friends” materialized on the scene.
In his book, “Politics of Liberation in South Sudan: An Insider’s View,” Dr. Peter Adwok Nyaba writes thus: “In one of his meetings with Dr. John Garang, the Zambian President, Kenneth Kaunda, shed tears of joy and pride when he heard that the black Africans were now ridding themselves of the yoke of Arab oppression and domination in the Sudan.” In Dr. John Garang and the SPLM/SPLA, the African leaders “saw an opportunity to correct the prejudice of history and fate of the African people in the hands of the Arabs and the Europeans. That helped in boosting the awareness of the people about the cause and tribulations of their fellow blacks in the Sudan.”
