Thursday, 21 September 2023 (PW) — In a historic development for the Jonglei State, the Ministry of Land, Housing, and Public Utilities welcomed high-level delegates from the Central Bank on Wednesday, led by David Manyuon, the Director of the Central Bank. Accompanied by a contracted team of engineers, they gathered to kickstart establishing the first Central Bank branch in Jonglei State.

This remarkable initiative has been long-awaited, with its roots tracing back to 2006 during the tenure of Kuol Manyang Juuk as the Governor of Jonglei State. At that time, the former Governor of the Central Bank had envisioned the establishment of a branch within the state, and land was allocated in Bor, the capital of Jonglei State, for this purpose.

Isaac Mamer Ruk, the Minister of Land, Housing, and Public Utilities, shared his enthusiasm for this project during a statement made on Wednesday. He revealed that his office had received a delegation comprising Central Bank staff members, with David Manyuon, the Director of the Central Bank, at the helm. Accompanying them was a team of contracted engineers who would be responsible for surveying the land allocated for this significant endeavour.

“The construction of this branch has been a long-awaited dream for the Central Bank, and it has finally come to life with the visit of the Central Bank team. The first step will involve the construction of a concrete fence, which is expected to be completed within 90 days,” stated Minister Mamer, his voice filled with optimism.

Establishing this Central Bank branch is a momentous event for the region and holds significant promise for employment opportunities. It is expected to create jobs for the youth of Jonglei State, particularly in Bor, where the branch will be situated. Additionally, the branch’s location in Tebek, known for hosting various government offices, underscores its strategic importance.

Minister Mamer provided further details regarding the project’s scope, emphasizing its size and role in the government ministries’ district in Tebek. He said, “The bank will occupy a substantial area, 200 by 230 square meters, right within the government ministries’ vicinity in Tebek. Moreover, it will join other banks in the area, such as Kush Bank and Agriculture Bank, contributing to the region’s overall economic development.”

Establishing the Central Bank branch in Bor is poised to be a transformative development for Jonglei State, promising economic growth, employment opportunities, and enhanced financial services for its residents. As the branch construction commences, all eyes are on this historic endeavour that will undoubtedly impact the region’s economic landscape.
