Police Crack Down on Dollar Hawkers in Juba as Fear of Economic Collapse Grips South Sudan

Friday, 29 March 2024 (PW) — Juba is gripped by fears of an impending economic collapse as the government intensifies efforts to maintain order and stability amid mounting challenges. The recent police crackdown on illegal dollar hawkers in the Customs Market area of the capital city underscores the authorities’ determination to curb unauthorized economic activities that could further undermine the country’s fragile financial system.

The crackdown comes at a critical juncture for South Sudan, as the nation grapples with the reverberations of the ongoing civil war in neighboring Sudan. The conflict between the paramilitary Sudan Rapid Forces and the Sudanese army has led to a shutdown of oil production, directly impacting South Sudan’s economic lifeline.

South Sudan’s heavy reliance on oil exports leaves its economy vulnerable to external shocks, and the disruption in Sudan’s oil production has raised fears of a potential economic collapse. The situation is exacerbated by the country’s already precarious economic conditions, characterized by political instability, conflict, and a lack of economic diversification.

Against this backdrop, President Salva Kiir’s recent visits to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Angola assumed greater significance. As the Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), Kiir’s peace mission aimed to drum up support for peace and security in the region, with a particular focus on the conflict in eastern DRC.

Speaking to the media upon arrival at the Juba International Airport after his tour, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Minister Dr. James Pitia Morgan, emphasized the importance of peace and stability in East Africa and the Great Lakes region.

The President’s diplomatic efforts highlight the interconnectedness of peace, security, and economic stability in the region. The ongoing civil war in Sudan poses a significant threat to South Sudan’s economic and security interests, as the two countries share close historical, cultural, and economic ties, including the crucial oil industry.

As South Sudan grapples with the fear of an economic collapse, the government’s ability to restore confidence in the economy, maintain law and order, and foster regional stability will be crucial. Addressing the root causes of the country’s economic vulnerabilities, such as over-reliance on oil and political instability, will be essential in averting a potential crisis and ensuring long-term prosperity and security for the nation.
