South Sudanese community seeks support for school and farming project in Tonj East, South Sudan
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, 17 April 2024 (PW) — A local community in Makuach village, Warrap State, South Sudan is appealing for funding and partnership support to expand educational opportunities and improve food security in the region.
The Makuach Secondary School has been operating since 2019, providing classes for 180 primary students and 35 secondary students taught by 12 volunteer teachers. However, the school lacks proper infrastructure, teaching materials, and cannot pay the dedicated teachers.
“Education is the backbone of our society and giving children the opportunity to learn will make our community stronger,” said Thokgor Reech, Acting Deputy Head Teacher. “But we need support to build more classrooms, pay our teachers properly, and provide a conducive learning environment.”
In addition to educational needs, the Makuach community is seeking assistance to boost local farming initiatives and achieve food self-sufficiency. More frequent droughts, floods, and other extreme weather linked to climate change have devastated crops and cattle in recent years.
“Our vision is for our community to be able to grow enough food to end chronic hunger,” Reech stated. “With resources like a tractor and irrigation, we can significantly improve productivity and resiliency.”
The community has launched a crowdfunding campaign but understands more substantial funding is required. They are calling on the South Sudanese government, international non-profits, diaspora groups and any organizations focused on education or food security to partner on this locally-led initiative.
“We have a plan and just need the support to move forward,” Reech added. “Investing in Makuach’s school and farms is an investment in peaceful living and development for the whole of South Sudan.”
The total budget for school infrastructure, teacher salaries, farm equipment and other needs is approximately $250,000 over the first 1-2 years. However, the community welcomes any contributions, big or small.
