Thursday, 10 October 2024 (PW) — An article presented to the National Mental Healthcare Organization, South Sudan in relation to the Celebration of World Mental Health Day, October 10, 2024.
1. Introduction
Mental wellness, or good mental health, is the ability to think, feel, and interact in ways that enhance life enjoyment and effectively manage difficult situations. It encompasses emotional and spiritual well-being while respecting culture, equity, social justice, relationships, and personal dignity (Centre for Mental Health Promotion, National Mental Healthcare Organizations in South Sudan, 2024).
Without mental wellness, individuals may struggle to reach their full potential or actively participate in daily life. Mental health issues cover a broad spectrum, from enhancing emotional well-being to treating and preventing mild to severe mental illnesses and suicide prevention.
2. Mental Health in South Sudan (1955 – 2024)
The prolonged conflict in South Sudan has significantly impacted the mental health of its population. Key points include:
– 95% of the civil population has experienced mental illness during their lifetime.
– Over 85% of adults living with mental health problems developed symptoms in childhood or early adolescence.
– War-related traumas include killings, bombardments, rape, child abduction, communal conflicts, hunger, violence against women, cattle raiding, and family dysfunction.
– Common mental health issues include depression, social anxiety, PTSD, and eating disorders.
Mental health comprises three major components: cognitive health, emotional health, and behavioral health. These components interact and influence each other, all being crucial for overall well-being.
