Thursday, 05 December 2024 (PW) — The 8th Governors’ Forum, held in the stately Freedom Hall of Juba, was a spectacle of political theatre cloaked in rhetoric about peace and development. And the final resolutions and recommendations are another splendid parade of handshakes, head nods, and heartfelt speeches.
Under the banner of “Forging Sustainable Peace,” Governors from all corners of South Sudan gathered to tackle the nation’s pressing challenges. Or, at least, they promised to.
President Salva Kiir urged unity and economic innovation, reminding governors to “create jobs for the youth” and “ignite investments.” Stirring words indeed—but how exactly will state economies flourish amidst endless floods, endemic insecurity and political instability?
One does not simply ignite entrepreneurship while wading through knee-deep water and battling chronic hunger.
The forum also revisited peace talks under the Extended R-ARCSS. Delegations were restructured, optimism rekindled, and hopes rebranded—again. But after years of delayed promises, peace in South Sudan feels more like a mirage on the horizon: always visible, never reachable.
Even the flooding crisis, an immediate catastrophe, was addressed with a call to “mobilize resources.” Yet for thousands of displaced citizens, resources are as scarce as dry ground.
The forum’s resolutions may fill press releases, but will they fill stomachs, repair roads, or restore peace? Until rhetoric is matched by action, South Sudanese will continue to wait—patiently, but not forever.
