Condemnation of Sudan Government for Committing Atrocities Against Civilians in Wad Medani and Darfur
By Simon Tor Deng, Juba, South Sudan
Tuesday, 21 January 2025 (PW) — I express my strongest condemnation of the Sudanese government’s use of chemical weapons against civilians in Darfur, specifically in Nyala, and the recent killings of 2,000 South Sudanese citizens in Wad Medani. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have clearly demonstrated a disregard for human life by targeting innocent civilians, an act that constitutes a severe violation of human rights.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese government and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seems unlikely to end without significant intervention. The South Sudanese government must take decisive action to protect its people still residing in Sudan, especially those in Khartoum, by utilizing the support of the international community to facilitate their safe relocation to South Sudan.
It is deeply concerning that Sudanese forces, many of whom are poorly trained, resort to extreme measures, such as the use of chemical weapons, to suppress the people of Darfur. This points to a clear pattern of abuse by the Sudanese Army, which must be held accountable for its actions.
Furthermore, the Sudanese government has imposed a ban on recording and disseminating evidence of the killings of innocent civilians in Darfur, which reflects the regime’s desire to suppress the truth and evade responsibility for the atrocities committed.
The people of Darfur and the South Sudanese community in Sudan are suffering immensely. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families who have lost loved ones in these senseless killings. The violence and suffering cannot be allowed to continue unchecked. If the Sudanese government fails to cease its brutal actions, it will be necessary to call for international intervention to protect civilians in Sudan.
The South Sudanese border with Sudan must also be closely monitored, and troops should be deployed to prevent further cross-border violence. The tactics being employed by Sudanese Armed Forces are not only reminiscent of terrorism but are an attack on basic human dignity and rights. The international community must stand in solidarity with the people of Darfur and South Sudan, ensuring that those responsible for these atrocities are brought to justice and that civilian protection is prioritized.
The time to act is now. The peace in Sudan will not be achieved unless both parties are willing to compromise and work together to bring stability to the country. It is essential for the South Sudanese citizens living in Sudan to be protected by the Sudanese government, especially with the presence of UN agencies that could assist in such efforts. The ongoing conflict in Sudan requires the attention of both the South Sudanese and Burhan governments to resolve the situation and foster peace.
I firmly believe that the South Sudanese government has the right to engage in dialogue with the Sudanese government to put an end to the violence against civilians in Sudan. Additionally, the militias from the Abdel Fattah al Burhan government, who lack proper military training, need to undergo retraining in discipline to avoid further harm.
I strongly urge the Abdel Fattah al Burhan government to cease its unlawful actions against civilians in the Darfur region. Furthermore, the Sudanese government must halt the use of chemical weapons against the innocent people of Darfur, as these actions only prolong suffering and undermine efforts for peace.
The people of Darfur, as citizens of Sudan, have the right to live in peace without being victimized by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). It is unacceptable that unarmed civilians, who are simply going about their daily lives in the Darfur region, are being targeted and subjected to violence. This conflict, which disproportionately affects civilians in Darfur, must come to an end immediately.
Journalists and international observers should be granted access to witness the ongoing suffering of the people in Darfur and other affected areas of Sudan. The world needs to see the true extent of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Sudan.
If the government of Sudan continues to ignore the plight of its people and perpetuate the violence, the international community must apply pressure to hold the Sudanese government accountable and demand an end to the targeting of civilians. The solution to this conflict does not lie in further violence, but in open dialogue and negotiation at the table.
In conclusion, the stability of Sudan will remain elusive for many years unless there is a fundamental shift in the approach to governance and peace. The country is currently mired in a system of confusion and instability. The people of Sudan deserve better. If the government is serious about building a strong and prosperous nation, the violence must end now. The future of Sudan depends on it.
I, Simon Deng, underscores the necessity for Sudan to revert to civilian governance, replacing the current military regime, which is characterized by insufficient military training and inept governance. Permitting civilians to assume control of the government in Khartoum is indispensable for restoring peace in Sudan.
