Congratulations Comrade Bol Mel: A Historic Moment in the Metamorphosis of the SPLM

Thursday, 22 May 2025 (PW) — The recent appointment of Comrades Bol Mel, Mary Apai, and Simon Kun Poch as the First, Second, and Third Deputies to the Chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) is far more than a routine political reshuffle. It is a landmark event, both symbolic and substantive, that signals a long-awaited generational shift and the institutional maturation of our movement.

This milestone reaffirms the SPLM’s enduring capacity to evolve while remaining anchored in its founding ideals. It marks a decisive step toward transformation, ushering in a leadership renewal that embodies our core values of justice, unity, progress, and democratic continuity.

As a proud veteran of the Red Army, among the many who joined the liberation struggle in our youth, I write today with deep pride and renewed hope. I extend heartfelt appreciation to our Chairman, General Salva Kiir Mayardit, for his courageous and visionary leadership. His decision to empower a younger generation of leaders reflects both confidence in the future and reverence for our past.

Comrades Bol Mel, Mary Apai, and Simon Kun Poch are not only capable leaders, they represent the fresh energy and strategic insight needed to propel the SPLM into its next chapter. Their elevation signals a peaceful and dignified generational transition, one that brings renewed vitality, credibility, and a forward-looking vision to the helm of our movement.

To the founding fathers of the SPLM and the heroes of our liberation struggle, we owe a debt of profound gratitude. Your transition from active leadership to advisory roles is an act of patriotism and grace. You remain the moral compass of our party, the custodians of the values that birthed our movement and carried us to independence.

This is the SPLM we envisioned in the crucible of struggle, a movement that renews itself, listens to its people, honors its past, and adapts with purpose. What we are witnessing is not a rupture with our legacy, but its natural evolution, from a liberation force into a responsible institution of governance.

As South Sudan faces the urgent tasks of peacebuilding, reconciliation, and national development, this new leadership, guided by the wisdom of the liberation generation, offers a rare and timely opportunity. It is a moment to unify, rebuild, and lead the nation forward.

Indeed, the struggle continues. But it now continues with reinvigorated leadership, a clearer vision, and an unwavering commitment to the ideals that unite us all.

Let this moment be remembered not merely as a change in leadership, but as the rebirth of a vision, a vision of a stronger SPLM and a better, united South Sudan.

Long live the SPLM.
Long live South Sudan.
