National Constitutional Review Commission stuck

The National Constitutional Review Commission does not have money to conduct business, the Commission’s Chairperson Akolda Maantier has said.”We don’t have a budget. Since we were appointed in January, not a single pound has been paid to us. Without money you can hardly do anything,” Maantier told Radio Miraya on Friday. The Chairman also said the size of the commission is too large, hence difficult to manage effectively. “With a commission consisting of 55 members, it is extremely difficult to find a place with such a seating capacity. Unless you go to hotels but we do not have a budget for that. They don’t give us places for free, we must hire them. There is no money, so this makes it really difficult to say exactly when we are going to start. We have lost about seven months precisely because the government has not given us facilities”. The 55-man review team was named by President Salva Kiir in January to head the process of formulating a new national constitution to replace the transitional 2011 constitution. The Commission comprises of 41 men and 14 women representing various political parties, Civil Society Organizations and religious groups.
