Juba Massacre: True Story or a Ploy to gain sympathy from the international community?

By David Aoloch Bion

Juba Massacre, according to Riek Machar and his rebels ‘’ is the killing of 10,000 to 20,000 Nuer women and children in December 15 -16, 2013 in Juba by Dinka soldiers ‘’. Is this true story or is it a ploy by Riek and his rebels to gain sympathy from the international community?

On December 15, 2013, there was no warning of fighting at the Presidential Guards in Geada  located between Juba University and Jebel Market in Juba. All wives and children of the soldiers were with them in the barrack, Nuer and Dinka alike. The fight started at 10 pm .I was drinking tea at a Uganda girl open tea table in Jebel market at the time. We heard the gun sound. We dispersed to a different direction. I ran to barrack direction .The home; I was going is that direction. On the way, I met Nuer women and children running to Khor William. I did not meet the Dinka because; they ran to Juba University on other side. The fight went on and off throughout the night without single woman or child in the barrack, either a   Nuer or Dinka. They all ran out immediately for their own safety. in the morning , there was no a child or woman laying down in the barrack , only the men were littered .The Nuer women and children ran to Khor William at night , in the morning of December 16 , they proceeded to UN compound at Jebel Kujur on Yei road.

At 8am, the fight extended from the barrack to the residential area between the barrack and Jebel market. I was standing at the balcony of the house between the house of Maj. Gen Peter Bol Koang and the house of Maj.Gen James Koang, CDR, who defected in Bentiu. The tank knocked down the corner of the CDR house fence, there was no one hurt inside, and all people came safely. They ran passing our gate to Khor Willam . The so- called Dinka soldiers were standing at the plot of former JIU military police in Jebel. These women and children were given safe passage, no soldier fired at them. Some Nuer also were standing at balcony of the Bol Koang house watching too. The family of one of the brigadiers who rebelled at Tiger was locked inside his shop opposite our gate. On December 17, they opened the shop and went to UN compound and unhurt.

On December 16 , in New Site , Bilpam and New Bongo , the fight started at 7 am , all soldiers’ wives and children were present too , Dinka and Nuer alike . At the onset of the battle, both Dinka and Nuer women and children alike ran toward Juba Airport. The Nuer stopped at UN compound at Airport and the Dinka continued to Juba town. While the fighting still going on in New Site, Bilpam and Bongo. There was no single woman or child either a Dinka or Nuer . They ran

In 107, Manga areas, this is where some Nuer women and children were killed in the cross-fire. The Nuer soldiers who were defeated at New Site and Bilpam went to regroup there. The army moved in there, there was a fight. Nuer women and children were killed as they were running to Munuki and Gudele residential areas. This was a cross –firing not systematic killing… (MAY THEIR SOUL REST IN ETERNAL PEACE)?

On December 16, at 2pm, all Nuer women and children who were in Gaeda, New Site, Bilpam, Manga, 107 areas were already in UN compound in Jebel and Airport respectively. Nuer women and children went to UN compound while the fighting was still going on. At 4 pm on December 16, the road from Munuki to Bilpam was parked with Nuer cars outside the UN compound.

Now, Riek Machar and his rebels are claiming that 10, 000 to 20,000 Nuer women and children were killed in Juba on December 15-17, 2013. The question is,

‘’ When were they killed? Were they killed while their husbands and fathers still fighting the so- called Dinka soldiers or Were they killed after their husbands and fathers defeated and left?’’

If they were killed while the fight was still going on by Dinka, then Nuer would kill Dinka too, because they were mixed up in the same areas. There was no Dinka section or Nuer in barracks…

If it were after the Nuer soldiers left , then Dinka soldiers did not find single Nuer woman or child in 107 , Manga because they (Nuer women and children ) ran away while the fighting was still going in these areas to other parts of Juba then they proceeded to UN bases .

The truth is Nuer women and children were killed in 107 and Manga in CROSS-FIRE like any other tribe. The number killed is not thousand but in hundred. There was no systematic killing of Nuer women and children by Dinka as claims by the Juba Massacre Hypothesis

The cliché ‘’ Juba Massacre Hypothesis’’  said and said over and over is MIDSENTENCE PLOY coined by Riek and his Rebels for the following reasons

1      to draw attention away from the failed coup attempt

2      to gain sympathy from international community that Dinka are annihilating Nuer tribe

3      To indoctrinate hate, pogrom in the minds and hearts of Nuer people against the Dinka

4      To recruit Nuer Youth like White Army

5      To trigger the ICC to charge Salva Kiir for war crime and genocide

There is no justifiable reason for a Dinka man, even if he is wounded by Nuer, to shoot a 7 year old Nuer boy or girl, does she not look like his son? Does she not look like his daughter? Or shoot helpless  Nuer woman, does she not look like his own sister? . This is not true. There was systematic killing of Nuer . If Dinka were actually killing the Nuer. Why is it that they killed only ordinary Nuer? Why did not they enter the house of a prominent Nuer politician and kill him. And there were many Nuer prominent figures in Juba that day. This proven that those who were killed were killed in CROSS-FIRE. It is not premeditate   act.

There is no Juba Massacre of 10,000 to 20,000 Nuer women and children, but, indeed, there is a killing of 400 to 700 civilians in CROSS-FIRE between the soldiers of Salva Kiir and soldiers of Riek Machar on December 15-16, 2013. In Juba. May God rest souls in eternal peace .
