Presidential Term Limit should Top the Agenda of the Forthcoming Addis Ababa Talks
Why terms limit be the top agenda in 4th June peace talk of South Sudan in Addis Ababa
By David Aoloch Bion
South Sudanese are naturally violent, don’t care type of animals. Thus, they deserve a democracy, where the rule of law will override other virtues of the society. In practice, a justice of an eye for an eye, verbally insult for a number of days in prison. A pure democracy, where the will of majority is recognized and the will of minority is respected in pie chart of the society.
South Sudanese want democracy with water of their eyes. This democracy will not be modeled on the Great Britain democracy of open terms limit that made Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher ruled for 20 years until she fed up of the office, refused to listen to her supporters who insisted she should continue contesting. It will be modeled on the United States democracy of 2 terms limit, that allowed President George W Bush, who rigged the election that was won by Al Gore, ruled for 8 years and stopped him to rig vote for the second time.
It should be modeled on the US 2 term limit democracy because African incumbent President are good riggers of election. Term limits will stop the dictators who rule in democratic clothes. Every now and then , a dictator in democratic clothes rig the vote and he claims victory and legitimacy . Using the fact that people show up on polling station as justification , whether the vote was fair or not is not his case again
The stakeholders of South Sudan and the mediators who discuss the constitution , should put the term limits in top of lists of issues to be discussed in June 4TH inclusive session of peace talk . This will save the next generation from mess and coups , The other issues are trying to solve the problem between the two people , Salva Kiir and Riek Machar , which is short term solution , however , the term limit is long term solution for the country. The term limit should be put in the constitution, if you stakeholders and mediators want secure, stable, peaceful, prosperous South Sudan.
South Sudanese are proud, impatient, violent, competitive, intolerant, unenduring people. Even if Jesus Christ becomes the President of South Sudan and he provide everything , money , good healthcare , good education, best standard of living in world , stop corruption and he rule without a term limit , you will hear of attempted coups and rebellions.
A good example is story of small boy , who was given enough food by her mother , after he ate , he told his friends ‘’ my mother feed me well , I get satisfy , my eyes turn black like raven, and I hate my mother because of fullness’’.
‘’ if you prepare a banquet for South Sudanese, you take care, when they dance after they have eaten, they can bang your head in their celebration ’’
What they need is not good governance by one person but bad governance by many persons – bad governance in relay presidency after every 10 years
‘’What South Sudanese want is not good governance by one president for 30 years but bad governance by 3 different presidents for 30 years. Period’’.
If there is term limit and he /she (incumbent president) can rig the election for first time, people will be patient because he/she has no chance to rig for the second time
If there is term limit , there will be no corruption , because any one in power now will know in next 10 years , he will be out of the power , if he abuses the office , he will be tried and sentence like the former prime minister Olmet of Israel , who is now spending 3 years in prison for bribery in office.
