Nuer People are one of the 64 tribes in the Republic of South Sudan. They have the absolute right of ruling South Sudan like any other tribe. The Nuer have tried to exercise that ULTIMATE right of ruling, taking power three time, but they failed. The Nuer have the vision of leadership for the Republic but they might have poor strategies or lack strategies all together…

The first search for power was by Samuel Gai Tut in 1983, He attempted to take power from John Garang. He failed because he mobilized Nuer alone, although he had some people from the other tribe like Akuot Atem, Akuot did not have enough support from his Bor people.

The second search for power was by Riek Machar in 1991. He attempted to take power from John Garang. He failed because of the following reasons:

  1. He mobilized only Nuer youth 100%.
  2. He ignored other tribes support although some members from other tribes like Telar Ring, Dengtiel Ayuen etc were with him, but have no enough support from their tribe.

3   He used violent as strategy

The violence he applied radicalized both Nuer and Dinka. Now because of that violence people have gone through, there are some radicals from Nuer and Dinka alike , who say bad things for example,

Some Nuer say “we will not accept the Dinka Presidency, we must fight to the end’’. This is bad for stability, security and peace in country. Why can’t you accept the Dinka presidency when they are South Sudan like you? Nuer will be President of Republic soon too.

Some Dinka say, “No Nuer will rule this country’’ this also wicked perception, why can’t Nuer rule when they are South Sudanese like you.

4    He used superstition like Wurnyang. Which is obsolete in modern science and philosophy world.

The third search for power was by Riek Machar in 2013. He attempted to take power from Salva Kiir. He failed because he used the following strategies

1        Violence as strategy.

2        He mobilized Nuer 100% against Dinka 100%, which ends in win -win equation

3        He ignored other tribe support, although he has some members from other tribe like Lado Gore , Lado has no popular support from his Bari people

4        He used superstition like Dak Kueth who in rally at Gadiang before Riek Machar said

“Naath youth, this is time Ngundeng spoke about. This is Riek Machar, Ngundeng spoke about. The man whose teeth are well spaced. God has salvaged him in Juba, if he has reached you here, you have two moral obligations

A. You will take him to His throne in Juba.

B. There is someone Ngundeng also spoke about called Thokyual (Kiir). He is also In Juba; you will bring his head here to me

C   Any Naath youth who will remain here, who will not take part in enthronement fighting. He will get blind. I am sorry to use the word “fighting”, actually, it is not fighting it is just a ceremony’’.

Anyway, that is all history, and then what is the way forward for Nuer?

Back to our original question.

How will Nuer people win in their 4th search for power in South Sudan?

Nuer man who wants to become the President of Republic of South Sudan must do the following things

1.  Nuer presidential hopeful should win 50% Nuer support and 50% Dinka support.

2. Nuer presidential hopeful should make Dinka name as a taboo, he and his supporters should not mention it in any way whether bad way or good way

3.     Nuer presidential hopeful should outline his policies without criticizing anyone, once he criticize anyone, he is antagonizing his supporters, therefore, outlining without criticism

4      Nuer people should renounce violence and resort to peaceful, political strategies of attaining power.
