SPLM Leaders (Former Detainees) Welcome Recent IGAD Summit on Peace in South Sudan

1. We the SPLM Leaders welcome the decisions of the IGAD Heads of State and Government on Peace in South Sudan as came in their Communique of 10th June, 2014.
2. We in particular appreciate the determination of the IGAD Heads of State and Government in holding the summit to recommit President Salva Kiir Mayardit and former Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny to abide by the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement as well as the commitment to bring peace to South Sudan within sixty (60) days. This time-bound commitment is important given the tragic and deplorable situation facing the people of South Sudan as a result of the conflict.
3. As came in previous statements, our position is for immediate ending of the war in order to give peace a chance. We call upon all people of South Sudan to direct all their efforts towards this end.
4. It is in the above context that we recently met President Kiir in Addis Ababa on the sidelines of the IGAD Summit to engage him on the urgent need to stop the war and bring peace to the country. It is in the same spirit, that we have also been engaging former Vice President Dr. Machar and IGAD leaders in the search for peace in South Sudan.
5. We reaffirm our trust and confidence in the IGAD mediation process and will contribute positively towards the realization of peace in our country.
6. Finally we call upon IGAD to remain seized of the process.
