Bitter Upshot of Modern Family (Excerpt)
By Wenne Madyt Dengs, South Sudan
July 13, 2015 (SSB) —- It sounds strange now in new African families as there are changes which make it difficult for husband and wife to in conformity with cultural norms as modernization and civilization are making it poles apart.
However, in context with Africa traditional society; a family used to have norms which were derived from societal related customs. Neither wife nor husband remains detached from the eminent negative repercussion of the modern era of the family’s living standards.
Voice of a wife
–
My husband comes home late
He is always attending meetings at mid-night
He is a man whose working hours never end
He works for nearly twenty four hours
I fear what he is doing to me
The man of my age
He is educated to eradicate our family
–
My husband comes home late
Oh my husband,
He doesn’t know his age
He assumes to be either young or old
He wears jeans
With his five cell phones; he doesn’t have time to talk with his wife
Hello, hello,
Who are you?
That’s how he answers my calls
–
My husband comes home late
The husband of my heart
He never eats at home
When he is given meal;
He is either tired or no appetite
Oh my husband, people who work hard also eat!
A man must eat in his house
A man must eat his muscle
Sometimes you take a spoonful in pretense
I am your counterpart
I know what you are doing
–
My husband comes home late
He moves like a snake
He doesn’t see well
He smell rotten though lovely
He fails to roll his tongue
I can’t hear any word
He sleeps like his mother
No chatting at night!
–
My husband comes home late
He talks with another person on phone
A person with a click sound
A person that he answers NO Problem
A person that he always says to meet in a hotel
Oh my husband,
He doesn’t care about his wife
He doesn’t care about his children
–
Voice of a husband
–
Oh my dear wife,
The wife that I married with undisputable dowries
The wife that I poured my wealth
She has become my headache
She wears my attires
We are either both males or females
I doubt her current gender
–
Oh my dear wife,
She slim and slender
She is black-reddish in colored woman
She has turn her beauty to be her duty
She doesn’t know kitchen
She doesn’t know river
She just knows plates and bridges
–
Oh my dear wife
You only want to give me two children
You only want to remain young forever
Remember my cows;
The amount of money I added;
To satisfy your desperate family
You have to give me more children
I want to be like my grandpa
–
Oh my dear wife,
You are either married or searching
You still have outing days
Even when I am not ready
You can just do alone
–
It continues
