The Harassment of South Sudanese Nationals in Kenya by Police
BY AKOL AMET DUT AKOL, NAIROBI, KENYA
August 16, 2015 (SSB) –– Kenya police act for harassment and unlawful detention of south Sudanese students in Kenya are always in truck to threats: intimidations, humiliations by Kenya Police in privacy ways asking the Identity card (ID) if you don’t have an ID or it remains at home, you must to pays externally huge amounts of Kenya Shilling so that, you can be free or you might be taking to police stations/custodies without crimes, fraud committed and demanding the amount of dollar until you pay to set you free; it is always undermining our co-operations with Kenyan people in our country those who occupies our positions as a citizens of the country of south Sudan.
Since South Sudan became independent in July 9th 2011, Kenyan police forces have regularly intimidated and unlawfully arrested and detained south Sudanese students of the illegality in connection with the contents of their reporting payment to be releases in their custodies of police in Kenya. The legitimates students of south Sudan who are orphans by having a incompetent or incapable ambassador to protecting its people, in the foreign land, are calling for an end to the harassment by Kenyan Police if we don’t have documented multiple with money in cases, many at the hands of South Sudan’s National who doesn’t have money to free themselves are suffering indeed and our ambassador sleeping here in Kenya.
The ambassador we have here in Kenya is not active at all; because he is representative his own native or community (Twic Mayardit) and the Kenyan police are aware that’s why they intimidating other, south Sudan’s ambassador to Kenya is un-functional ambassador that’s why they always do so, and no questions have arising to prompting the Kenyan authority; because the authority of our almighty south Sudan ambassador to Kenya is sub-divides and tear apart as south Sudan at large are orphans in Kenya and in this very situations that we’re in sufferings. May God Saves us…
“The South Sudanese authorities have done far too little to end unlawful detention for south Sudan students in Kenya,” why am I saying this? It is because am always victims to Kenyan police but not me alone and also I witness a lot of incidents that occurrence or happened to my fellows citizens of beloved country of south Sudan and colleagues who are affected. “The government should rein in its policy and investigate this matter from the Kenyan Gov’t with its people.
Question!!! South Sudan doesn’t have the state body mandating to regulate the embassy in Kenya? . Kenya Police personnel engage in de facto censorship through harassment and illegal detentions for students. Is it because we don’t have the proper Gov’t to protect us? Or is it because they think that, we’re all refugee?
“South Sudanese students in Kenya are always victimizations by Kenya Police since our struggled and increasingly putting us in dangerous truck because of the harassment by the Kenyan police. “This is deeply worrying me and in contradiction with South Sudan’s students in Nairobi and some other part of Kenya, which requires the government to guarantee freedom of students.”
Many south Sudanese students say they choose not to report on contentious issues for example, corruption is everywhere in Africa and the internal politics of South Sudan’s ruling us out not to be treating fairly, because they are truly calling us a warlord of south Sudan country with its people. Either they have been told not to cover those subjects by police forces and/or the Kenyan Gov’t is not aware this intimidated or detained for producing similar stories of pesa (equality, capital and cash)
On December 4, 2013, I was robbery in front of the Kenyan Police forces and they wasn’t helped me because am a foreigner, and on October 27 2014 I was captured by Kenyan Police asked me the Identity Card (ID) then I was provided him the enough documents: ID, Password, valid visa and he asked me to support my documents, but I was refused to do so because I was having all the requirement that he was asking for; from there he was returned back my documents and he took a walked.
And today, by 2:57PM August 15, 2015 East Africa time” it was repeated by other police officer who met me in the undertow and I do the same” that’s why am free now I might be in the custody if I wasn’t have it all the requirements. My worrying is, if we don’t have those requirements of documents, by the way, who will gonna helping us in this jungle?
South Sudanese Authorities should be quick to condemn the Kenyan police act and promptly opening an investigation where south Sudanese are living in, within Kenya. However there has been no progress in identifying the police officers, and our government official shall connecting the authority of Kenya Gov’t to investigation the incidents is going on here in Kenya to caught a thieves in the manner ways.
Arbitrary Arrests, Harassment of south Sudanese students in Kenya
Across the country, Kenyan Police forces harass and arrest south Sudanese citizens or students and other ordinary citizens of south Sudan who has invalid visa.
In early June-July 2014 detained a number of students for two hours after who tried to collect information about a controversial of mistreated by Kenyan security is too high. The officers confiscated the student’ mobile phones and identification documents and forced them to leave him to police custody because the guys are not ready to pay the huge amount that they were expected from them. No clear grounds were given for their detention up to date.
In Juba, South Sudan Kenyan are free to works and moves everywhere they wants in the country and here, it is very restricting to south Sudanese citizen who are not even working here, if you don’t have ID with money to supports your documents then you’re in trouble. The students would not be charged or arrest without any crime committed.
South Sudanese Students Censorship, Increasing Self-Censorship
South Sudan does not have a public body with a mandate to protecting the students and regulate the south Sudanese in particularly to be saves. However, Kenyan Police officers have begun to censor some stories and put pressure on innocents’ students who doesn’t have money to free him/herself in the custody of Kenyan Police.
So they arrested everybody who didn’t have proper papers or document, even Kenyans without proper document are free to moves in Juba, south Sudan. Most of South Sudanese citizens in Kenyan are born in Kenya. I don’t think there is any problem now, but Kenyan police is doing illegality just to get money even I don’t think the government of Kenya is aware about that.”
Last year Kenyan authorities arrested a number of South Sudanese whom they said entered the country without legal documents. They were arrested during what Kenyan authorities called “clean- up operations” to get rid of suspected terrorists in the country but we are not terrorists at all; Kenyan Government should bears in their minds that we are terrorist.
