Youth unemployment is a time bomb in South Sudan
By Mading Abraham Majur, Kampala, Uganda
November 5, 2015 (SSB) — Population is almost hitting… people; however, 75 percent are youth. About 100,000 youth are released from institutions of learning as drop outs fresh graduates who soon or later form the labour market but with no proper skills.
Unfortunately, only about 200 jobs exist in South Sudan’s labour market, therefore, 100,000 released every year compete for only 200 jobs which is most cases are taken by old illiterate men. This shows that every year, about 980,000 youth remain unemployed.
In a period of 5 years about 1,000,000 youth in South Sudan are unemployed this contribute greatly to corruption as many youth try to compete for the few available jobs which some end up “buying” from employers while other get because of technical know who instead of technical knowhow” it is therefore, not a surprise that cases of the youth joining armed forces are high and how shall we build a professional national army?
Also it is not a surprise that cases of mob justice and robbery are on the rise as there are many unemployed, desperate and idle youth. Unless the government of South Sudan find more technical approaches to solve youth un-employment, such as cases will persist, economic development will never be achieved and South Sudan will continue to dance to the tunes of the donors and even worse, accept to adopt their ways of behaviors no matter whether good or bad for our society because dependant on aid.
South Sudan has the potential the resources to solve our problems in including un-employment but the approach to utilization is what is still in appropriate, the end result is abject poverty, looming with meager and delayed salaries even for the SPLA. The poverty is still hitting almost 90% of South Sudanese’ households.
So, what are the state affairs and how do we survive in an era of falling the commodities prices with so many indications of dissipate, corruption and impunity. Indeed, and what is the position of South Sudan government in world economy? In which many of our youths are always searching in vain for employment.
We know that the embarrassment is compounded by the recurring shortage of our oil refined products which deal goes further still to harm our economy but also corruption and lack of transparency has dealt a massive blow on the state resources and to address this problems and challenges facing economy.
South Sudan government should tackle on corruption in all sectors of the country economy and establish a strong sufficient duty mores to the right way for agriculture and education sectors.
These means there’s serious need for government intervention.
