UN exaggerated reports on the killing in Leer have damaged its credibility more than the reputation of the SPLA

By David Aoloch Bion, Juba, South Sudan

March 17, 2016 (SSB)  —-  UN Reports on SPLA human right violation have in it 8 questions searching for answers from disinterested groups and critical thinkers because UN have used biases and emotions that undermine its neutrality and impartiality

The United Nation has released a report that accused the South Sudan army, SPLA of violating human rights. The following are the quotes from the reports ‘’ the government allow SPLA to rape women as form of payment ‘’ the children and disabled killed by being burned alive ‘’ , ‘’60 civilians suffocated in a container ‘’ , ‘’ civilian cut to pieces ‘’ , a women raped by five soldiers in front of her children ‘’ , ‘’ the SPLA carried out the scorch to earth policy ‘’ ,

if  you analyze the UN report from the disinterest point of view,  you might conclude that the Report is exaggerated by applying the ’’ emotive language’’. As it is seen that the UN has applied the emotive language in its report, this takes us to another discipline call ‘’Critical Thinking’’ in order to analyses such language. Thus, ‘’critical thinking’’ means evaluating the conclusions of others, considers the source of information and carefully examine its validity, consider the source of information, not accepting an explanation just because someone in authority offers it or because you have always been told that it is true explanation but because you have independently discovered that there are good reasons for accepting it.

UN have used devices and techniques which are used in political propaganda and rhetoric between the nations ,therefore , let us  use our critical thinking to analyze them , these devices and techniques used ,.

: 1. ‘’fighting words’’ that means ‘’ words whose express purpose is to create a disturbance and incite violence in the persons who hears them, like ‘’ disabled , children and  elderly burned alive ‘’ in the report .

2. ‘’emotive language’’ that means ‘’ a language that expresses and arouses emotion and move an audience to accept a point of view or undertake an action , .it tries to promote a favourite cause or tell a story from a particular point of view, it dramatizes historical event to play with the emotion of the people, it disguises judgment as statement of facts , in attempt to prove a claim by its selection of facts and words ,with intention of shaping perception of people from reality . . Its  phrasing of the question and choices of words affect our answer to the question.

3. ‘’Slanting’’ its means ‘’the selection of facts and words with favourable or unfavourable connotation to create the impression that no alternative views exists or can be defended, it is always prejudice, a judgment without regard to facts and not aware of your own biases and special interest, you believe that your position is the only correct one, like UN report itself .

4. ‘’Appeal to pity’’, this is done by saying words that will allow people to sympathize with you or Appeal to special treatment, this is done by saying that, you are marginalized therefore, you deserve special treatment. Like ‘’ cut dead person in to pieces ‘’

Let us go back to the report, This report was prepared by the researchers. As you read the Report, you have to ask yourself the 8 following questions. Keep your in  mind that the answers given below  are either true, half – true or false therefore, you have to give your own answer using critical thinking and in light of the devices and techniques given above

.
1. Who is research’s sponsor? The research’s sponsor is the United Nation and the Amnesty International.

2. .Do sponsors have the agenda? , How might the sponsor agenda influence the research, in term of question wording and interpretation of the event or story? Well, UN have the agenda and the agenda is , it wants to show that it cares about South Sudanese more than the Government. In fact, UN and the State of Sudan are competing now  over the citizens; each one is trying to win the heart and minds of the citizens over the other . This is why UNMISS is the archrival of the Government of South Sudan. This is why UN Miraya FM is the archrival of state own SSTV.  For example, if SSTV report that SPLA clashes with rebels in Yambio, Miraya FM will reports that SPLA clashes with citizens or civilians in Yambio . When SSTV report that Governor of West Lich state arrive in Bentiu, Miraya FM will report senior official from Unity state  arrived in Bentiu. When there is no Unity state any more but UN is still calling it Unity state in order to keep dispute and conflict between those who want 28 states and those who are against it. All in all, the UN agenda is the continuation of its mandate by falsifying situation on the ground.

3. Do the researchers have a stake in a particular interpretation of the event or story? Yes, the researchers who carried the research were the SPLM /A IO supporters or  sympathizers. The researchers want SPLA to appear as villains in eye of the public

4. Do the researchers consult sources other than their own investigation to help them portray distant event or story? The researchers believe in their investigation  and  work as authentic one.

5. From which population was the researched taken? From the anti-government population

6. Do the questions lead to respond in one way or another? Is the research targeting to get certain answers? As there is a civil war, it is assumed that there must be human rights violation, therefore, question were designed to lead to human right violation answers.
7. Do the stories or events depicted in the research fit with sense of reality? The events do not fit the sense of reality, for example ‘’rape as form of payment ‘’ does not fit the sense of reality, if you refuse to pay someone money and he is angry, will this person have appetite for sex or raping?

8. Is the research building a case? Yes, the research is building the case for the  would-be Hybrid Court for South Sudan. This exaggerated report will be used as bases for trying the SPLA Generals in Hybrid Court

.
Therefore, UN exaggerated reports is nothing but attempt to divide South Sudanese more than ever before so that violence continues and UN mission continue.

UN exaggerated reports is nothing but attempt to inflame hate among South Sudanese more than ever before so that crisis continue and UN funding continue from donors
UN exaggerated report is nothing but attempt to predispose war among South Sudanese more than ever before as job security for UN peacekeepers ..

The UN exaggerated report was intended to damage the reputation of SPLA but have done the opposite. Any sound mind person can’t believe or accept that starving man can rape woman  to get satisfy his hunger  as UN claims it.
