A letter to my unborn Daughter
By Teresa Atilieu Diing, Nakuru, Kenya

If everything around me is all imagination
Then you are the best thing I have come up with
Everyone says you’re going to look just like me
It’s an argument though because some disagree
But I know your smile will light up the room
I’m still working on what name I will give you
And I’m hoping that when you do exist
You will mean everything to me
–
It’s a cold world out here my darling
People are going to tell you who to be
Or worse judge you for who you are not
People will judge you by the color of your skin
But I will not choose your father by his skin color
I will not care if you are light or as dark as I am
I will love you with no conditions
You will mean everything to me
–
I pray the world accepts you my love
That the sound of my heartbeat calms you
That you will not allow anyone to disrespect you
Or convince you that your color is wrong
Because the color of your skin does not define you
Because light or dark your future is bright
For I will cross oceans and climb mountains for you
You will mean everything to me.
