Jonglei State Community-USA: Call for Peaceful Coexistence in South Sudan’s Jonglei State

4 min read

Monday, May 11, 2020 (PW) — The Jonglei State Community-USA is hereby writing to inform the general public that members of the Jonglei state in diaspora are condemning any act that abrogate peace in the Republic of South Sudan. It has been more than 6 years since the inception of political chaos in the country. The Government of the Republic of South Sudan, under the leadership of President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the 5 Vice Presidents, and entire the president’s docket are solely responsible for the political affairs of the nation.

For peace to prevail in the Republic South Sudan, communities need to embrace the ongoing implementation of the peace accord. The people of South Sudan have suffered enough, forging a better future requires people to desist from supporting further breakup of the social fabric. South Sudan is a multicultural; multilingual and multi-religious nation, and people must accept to live side by side, and as peace-loving neighbors.

The leadership of the Jonglei community in the United States is hereby calling against political bickering in Jonglei state. On February 15, 2020, the President of the Republic of South Sudan rolled out a presidential decree reversing his earlier decision that divided South Sudan into 32 federal states. The current administrative status of South Sudan’s states is 10 state plus 2 administrative areas. The nation as a whole has settled on the decision by the presidency.

The SPLM’s Factions in the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity plus other political parties under the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) can allocate states’ Governors as they deems appropriate, and based on the agreement. In the recent days, there have been letters in circulation, one for the allocation of Jonglei to the SPLM-IO and another one against the president’s decision to give Jonglei to the SPLM-IO. Just to clear the air, there is no meeting held, and there will be no meeting at a community level to discuss allocation of Governors.

What is going on are series of protests on the social media, against allocation of Jonglei state to the SPLM-IO, and a renewed call for the creation of Bor Administrative Area out of the Jonglei state. A simple answer to the ongoing bitter complain is to tell president Salva Kiir Mayardit to kick Riek Machar out of Juba, de-implement all parts of the peace agreement, and denounce all the rebels who recently joined the R-TGoNU.

For the record, the Greater Bor Community (GBC) does not include Twic East Community and Duk Community. The press Release put out by Groups that called themselves Greater Bor Community (GBC) in Bortown is a fake news. There is no Greater Bor Community in Bortown as an umbrella for Bor community, Twic East Community and Duk Community. The three communities from the most recent Jonglei state only meets at the state level, the Jonglei state.

The repetitive discussion centering around call for creation of administrative area, out of the current Jonglei state, and apart from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area is a false message intended to generate social unrest in a politically volatile atmosphere. It should be further noted that there is no consensus reached about the rejection of the allocation of Jonglei state to the SPLM-IO.

The conflict in the Republic of South Sudan was fought between the SPLM-IO and the Government of South Sudan plus other splinter groups. The genesis of most conflicts in Africa is credited to lack of social platform that support coexistence. The parties to the conflict have agreed to cease fighting, and have reached a consensus to allocate states and administrative areas to peace stakeholders. This is to discount SPLM-IO’s letter that distanced the armed opposition Group from the presidency’s decision.

If there has ever been any meeting held, then it was solely held by members of the Bor Community in Bortown. The community (GBC) referenced is defunct, it neither exists in abstract nor in reality. In fact, Jonglei state has 8 Jieng’s subtribes: Hol, Twic, Nyarweng, and Bor in southern Jonglei plus in Luac, Paweny, Thoi, and Rut of Pigi county (northern Jonglei).

The press release put out by the nonexistent Greater Bor community in Bortown does not represents the mentioned communities in Jonglei. It’s with great dismay that people are making political decision on behalf of the masses, and without approval to do so. The leaderships of the Jonglei State Community in diaspora are sending the voice of the majority to public domain.

In conclusion, the JSC in the USA and other branches around the world have resolved to, and reached a consensus that no particular community should mobilize civil population to obstruct Government’s structures or assignment of gubernatorial positions to certain political parties.

It is prime time that people of South Sudan give peace a chance. Leaders come and go; the current South Sudanese leaders are at their sunset, communities need time to heal. May peace prevail in the Jonglei state, and across all the states in the Republic of South Sudan.

Undersigned by the JSC leadership in the United States of America.
