BCYA Elections: Congratulations to Dr. Bior Kwer on his Election Victory

Monday, December 14, 2020 (PW) — More than two months of heated campaigns for BCYA chairmanship has finally come to an end. While it is hard to believe the victory of Dr. Bior Kwer Bior over the highly celebrated charismatic young leader Counsel Yak Ajak Ariik in the recently concluded BCYA elections, it is a culture of democracy to accept the results in what Jon Pen at times refers as ‘Democrazy’ – a rare situation where a probably imprudent majority overturns the decision of the prudent few.

On the other hand, it is to be noted that Dr. Bior has really worked very hard, through thick and thin to make sure he wins this election. Aided by his aides including the interest groups, he has excruciatingly become the chairman-elect of the BCYA to 652 (out of 1,566) voters who did not vote for him – like me. But the truth is he will occupy the chair (as there is currently no office) of BCYA for the next two years. And after a lot of consolations to myself, I am convinced at last to say congratulations to Beny Bior.

In the next two years of his term, youths and the community of Bor at large expect Bior to deliver and implement what he had promised to do during the campaign. But the immediate challenge now to the chairman-elect is to demonstrate leadership in his first one month and make sure the highly divided community during the campaign is reunited.

Counsel Yak Ajak Ariik has satisfactorily done his part by accepting the results publicly and congratulated Bior. In the interest of leadership, it is now Bior’s turn to make sure those who opposed his ideas don’t continue to be viewed as enemies as that has been what he is known of. He has to demonstrate leadership by bringing back together all the members under one umbrella in order to move the community forward.

It is unfortunate that the qualities of a leader in our community are measured mainly and only on what a leader can do rather than how a leader can lead the community in doing what is needed to be done. Dr. Bior was elected because he said he would do this and that but how he will lead and rally both the loyal and the disloyal members of the community toward the implementation of those goals was not taken seriously.

Many people know that Dr. Bior is short-tempered and disconnect immediately from people who oppose his ideas. He confessed this as his major weakness during the public debate.  It is my kind request that Dr. Bior gives enough time before his inauguration day to read and learn more on leadership for him to be successful not only as a hardworking person but also as a fascinating leader. I recommend one of my leadership favorite books “toughest people to love” by Chunk DeGroat. It talks about how to understand, lead, and love the difficult people in your life including yourself.

Apostle Paul said in his first letter to Corinthians. “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have no love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have no love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have no love, I gain nothing.

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things”, he added. ( 1 Corinthians 13: 1 – 7).

While Dr. Bior invests some of his time to becoming a leading leader, he has to make sure his team gets civilized. Most of our youths may have the level of education for them to be acknowledged as educated, but not all of them are civilized. The singing of songs and name-calling is outdated and we need to live to the standard of modern democracy for peace and harmony to prevail.

Inclusion, I would like to declare my utmost voluntary allegiance to Dr. Bior Kwer Bior and his entire team as the legitimate administration of BCYA in Juba for the sake of Pan Bor. I will continue to disagree where and when possible and give my support when and where possible. I take this opportunity to declare all my other posts and comments elsewhere on Facebook as null and void. My apologies for areas where I might have gone so mad or sounded too rude.

I salute Barrister Yak Ajak Ariik for his bravery both during the campaigns and after the negative results. I am confident of a leader in you. And if I were to vote again, I would still vote for you. I am happy to be on the minority side to stand with the truth. I am one of the proud 42% who saw the best in you. Congratulations!!!
