Bor, South Sudan (PW) – In a noteworthy homecoming, Governor Denay Jock Chagor returned to Jonglei State’s headquarters in Bor after attending the 1st National Economic Conference in Juba on September 12, 2023.

Upon his arrival at Bor airstrip, Governor Chagor was warmly welcomed by members of the executive, State members of Parliament, and enthusiastic youth and women’s groups. Additionally, a sizable group of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Bor Protection of Civilians (PoC) camp gathered at the airstrip, joyfully chanting traditional peace songs dedicated to Governor Chagor.

Following his arrival, Governor Chagor engaged in two consecutive briefings, one with State officials and another with NGO partners. These discussions primarily revolved around Jonglei State’s pivotal role in spearheading a new era of economic growth and embarking on critical development projects.

High on the agenda was creating job opportunities for the State’s young graduates, a priority to alleviate unemployment among the youth.

Governor Chagor emphasized the importance of collective efforts in implementing peace agreements and upholding the rule of law within the State, highlighting the necessity of ensuring a secure environment for all citizens.

Governor Chagor is expected to preside over the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed State officials, likely scheduled for tomorrow. The Governor has appointed Hon. John Matiop Achiek as the Mayor of Bor Town Municipal Council.

Hon. John Tiopic Achiek, hailing from Bor County, is a member of Dr. Riek Machar’s SPLM-IO and a staunch supporter of Governor Denay Jock Chagor.

Meanwhile, Jonglei State experienced a diplomatic visit of significance as a high-level delegation from the Netherlands Embassy graced Bor on the morning of September 12, 2023. Her Excellency Marjan Schippers, the Netherlands Ambassador to South Sudan, led this delegation.

The primary objective of this visit was to assess the humanitarian situation in Jonglei State. Governor Denay Jock Chagor and state officials warmly received the delegation at the State Secretariat General.

Expressing his gratitude, Governor Chagor thanked the Netherlands Ambassador and her team for their unwavering support of the people of Jonglei State and South Sudan. He stressed the need for agricultural activities within the State, aiming to alleviate the suffering of its people, including those residing in neighbouring countries as refugees.

The Governor pointed out that Jonglei State boasts abundant resources, including the Nile River, which can provide ample fish and water.

In response, the Netherlands Ambassador underlined the urgency of Jonglei State citizens establishing self-sufficiency in food production, bolstering security, and upholding the rule of law.

These recent events reflect the commitment of Jonglei State’s leadership to usher in a new era of growth, development, and cooperation with international partners, notably the Netherlands Embassy, to improve the lives of its citizens and advance peace and stability in the region.
