A Graduate of Jubocracy
By Darren Bul
My conversation with a Juba One primary school class one pupil whom I met at Shabah children Hospital walking from school going Home. With his shoelaces loose, I called the boy to help him in tying his shoelaces and stated the conversation with him in Juba arabic;
Me: Isim bitak munu? “what is your name?”
Boy:Isim bitayi Abraham.”my name is abraham”
Me:Ita fi yatu maderesa?. “which school are you?”
Boy:Juba One
Me:class kam?
Boy:p2, la p1.
Me :Bed wen? ” where is your home?”
Boy: fi atlabara. “in atlabara”
Me: Malu ita mashi bed be kuraha? “why are you going home on foot?”
Boy:Nas ta mwasalat deru gurush. ” the public buses do ask for money”
Me:keli aninaarkaf mwasalat sawa, ana bedafa,”let board the public bus
together and I will pay”
Boy:kwes. “okey”
while waiting for the public buses abraham shifted the conversation to a new topic and stated.
Boy: Ita bechupu bolish kef, anaderu kuun bolish baden. “how do you
see being a police, I would want to be a policeman in the future”
Me: Malu ita deru kuun bolish? ” why would you want to be a police”?
Boy:Achan bolish be wagif nas ua arabat kamat ua be shilu gurush min
Nas lo ita maodi gurush be tala silah.(and he demonstrate the how
the point a gun.) ” because the police do stop people and vehicles
on the way to ask for money and if you don’t, they will point a
gun at you.”
Me: malu umuun beshilu gurush be gua? ‘why do the take money by
force?”
Boy: Achan umuun akuma ke.” because they are the government.”
Me: Akuma beshilu hajat be gua?. ” Do the government takes things by
force?”
Boy: Hayike ita mabaref?. “yes, don’t you know that?”
This boy really made my day, if such young boys have wrong perception of what the government is, what do we have as the elderly to let them understand what the government is as it true definition goes or do we take the young Boy’s definition of government?, that is “a group of people who take things by force.”
Let think twice to cut the chain of corruption and induce some good ideas to the upcoming generation to have a better future, free of corruption.
