As I wrote the story of the first Palotaka boys’ journey, a story of ‘Nyan de Juan’, begged for a place in the Palotaka boys’ story but the odds dictate its exclusion; so to do it (Nyan de Juan’s story) justice, I made it a separate article! So here we go, let’s face it.

A brutal carnivore emerged in 1985; it roamed and localised in Kolnyang, part of Makuac (Ateer) and Anyidi payams. The villagers speculated and established theories about its origin, about its emergence at that particular time (1985), about its physical appearance during the day and at night, and about its disappearance.

Causes of ‘Nyan de Juan’

Thousands of Sudan’s soldiers would exit Juba in attempts of arriving in Bor town but the mighty SPLA crushed them. The crushing of 10 thousands soldiers sent a chilling fear into the heart of hearts of Arabs especially Gaafar Nimeiry and smeared the villagers, the owners of Anuet’s land, Pariak, Gooi, Panpadiar, the famous Malek and Malual de aghorbaar with a dangerous beast.

All those corpses not collected for proper burial, fed hyenas for weeks so a dangerous carnivore that specialised in eating children of 9 years old and below, evolved; the locals named it “nyan de juan ”__the girl with the underwear__ This carnivore terrorised the Kolnyang, Anyidi, and part of Makuac payams.

However, from Koch onwards to Duk county had never experienced its atrocities. ‘Nyan de juan ’__an hyena that evolved to feed on kids’ flesh__ ate and injured many kids in those payams; its victims today wear scars on their faces, for instance, around the eyes, ears, mouths or sometimes in the necks.

Villagers’ theories

Some villagers theorised that the Arabs, magically sent the beast as a retaliation of soldiers who fell in the battle of 10 thousands. And it (Nyan de Juan) transformed at night as a dark grey four-legged animal that resembled a dog with a pointy jaws. And during the day, it wandered as a ‘jombo’ (a short human with abnormal height) wearing an underwear.

According to the theorists, for those who watched ‘Hulk’ by Eric Bana, an Australian famous actor; in this movie, a person (Eric) that looks normal but he (breaks) mutates into a green airborne giant when some people agitate him. He hops and rockets into the air like a missile. Nyan de Juan behaved as such in regards to transformation.

In conclusion and possible Facts about Nyan de Juan

‘Nyan de Juan’ was stealth carnivore that had a speed of light, hearing and smelling senses. It could hear the breathing of the youngest child among 10 children! Nyan de Juan emerged after 10 thousands soldiers that perished in the hands of ‘Koryom’ (Locust), the first battalion of SPLA. ‘Nyan de Juan’ was an evolved hyena so no way it could transformed into human-like being.

It extinct or disappeared because all carnivores that adapt to feed on human’s flesh, can’t survive for long due to the following reasons: human’s diseases weaken the animal/carnivore’s immune systems so any sickness can kill it; human’s intelligence especially in defence make it hard for the beast to continue on surviving on humans.

And in 1991, when Riek mobilised his tribesmen to attack Bor, thousands of people, Dinka and Nuer flooded the forests, especially Kolnyang and Anyidi’s forests this might stressed the beast; the beast disliked the sounds of guns; the beast disliked attacking adults and attacking during the day”.

In the following year (1992), the area was flooded, this could be another reason that discouraged the beast in surviving in these parts of Jonglei State.
