By Taban Abel Aguek, Rumbek, South Sudan

I am a Dinka
I’m a mere simple Dinka
–
Here I meet you in this unknown bush
And you are the unknown gun man
–
I say No
You ask me if I am not a Dinka
I look at you in the face, I say am Dinka
–
You shoot me in the head
I die…
I die but not the Dinka
I only die…
–
I am a Dinka
I am not a regime
You shoot me and I die
The regime remains
–
I become useless
You too become useless
So, there go the two of us
The two that gained nothing
The Killer
And the Killed…
