South Sudan must be weaned off war

December 15, 2017 (SSB) — Commemorating 15 December 2013: SSHURSA urges the warring parties to value human dignity and end the violence. Sends condolences to the victim-families and survivors.

South Sudan Human Rights Society for Advocacy (SSHURSA) in strongest terms possible condemns all forms of violence in South Sudan. SSHURSA appeals to all political leaders of South Sudan under President Salva Kiir, armed opposition Movement under former Vice-President Dr Riek Machar and other armed and non-armed entities to stand beyond politics to end the violence.

The leaders should respect the dignity of their people and with urgency, restore peace in South Sudan. They should genuinely engage in Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)–led high-level revitalization forum (HLRF) scheduled for 17-22 December 2017 in Addis Ababa.

December 15, 2017 (SSB) — President Salva Kiir’s intransigence to cease from his unlimited appointments of corrupt and illiterate officials to head technical institutions has now yielded into a complete collapsed of the institutions and might equally result to insignificance of the government for the people they claimed to be working for as the repercussions of that malfunctioning bounce back to his presidency with prevailing power struggle.

The rule of law and respect for the system and its bylaws is the driving force for good governance and Directorate of Nationality, Passport, and Immigration which has abandoned its yellow books is not exceptional in this case.

The text of the following statement was issued jointly by the Governments of the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Norway.

December 15, 2017 (SSB) — On Monday, December 18, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) will convene the High-Level Revitalization Forum (HLRF) for the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (the Agreement). The members of the Troika (Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States) have made clear that the HLRF is a unique and critical opportunity to make progress towards peace. The humanitarian, economic, security, human rights, and political situation continues to deteriorate with devastating consequences for the people of South Sudan. Over half the population now lacks enough food to feed themselves and a third of the population has fled their homes, causing the largest refugee crisis in Africa. This situation is intolerable to the region and the international community. It cannot continue.
