KEY COMPROMISES NEEDED TO REACH A PEACE DEAL AT THE 3RD PHASE OF THE IGAD HIGH LEVEL REVITALIZATION FORUM IN ADDIS ABABA,ETHIOPIA

March 11, 2018 (SSB) — After the conclusion of the second phase of IGAD-led High Level Revitalization Forum (HLRF) from 5th to 16th Feb. 2018 in Addis Ababa –Ethiopia, the chance of reaching peace deal without the conflicting parties of South Sudan making genuine and remarkable compromises on their positions regarding sharing of responsibility under power sharing proposal proposed by IGAD is very low.

The sense of the conflicting political elites thinking about transitional period arrangement as short term arrangement is narrow and much of their thinking is influenced by individual political frictions more than public interest issues.

The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization is strongly advocating for the conflicting political elites to give peace chance for resolving their political differences in peaceful manner where citizens will be at centre of decisions making.

Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO says the only pathway for securing peace in the next round of HLRF is through the conflicting political elites making remarkable and meaningful compromises for peace deal to be reached. We are observing our political elites are now communicating with aggressive voices of no-compromise for reaching any peace deal if their political interest and consideration is not properly met by any proposes for peace deal.

The conflicting political elites have preferences for addressing their interest first than the general interest for South Sudanese later. This is sad moment created by our conflicting political elites

The fear now is the political elites may prolong the violent approach for mitigating their political differences.

This means a lot to the lives of civilians and their properties. Our call for the conflicting political elites is for them to end their violent and adopt non-violent approach for mitigating their political difference. Any continuous of violent approach in 2018 will not be in favor of society development and growth.

Majority of the conflicting political elites have been individuals exposed to process of peace mediation and this should be plus if they can take primary responsibility of ensuring peace is reaching timely.

Mr. Yakani stressed CEPO is petitioning IGAD Special Envoy to South Sudan, AU High Representative to South Sudan, UN Secretary General Special Envoy to South Sudan and Sudan and AU Commission Chair to organize a forum for the principals of the conflicting parties with aim of lobbying them for key compromises for reaching peace deal prior the forthcoming IGAD High Level Revitalization Forum 3rd phase.

“The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) is a non-profit, civil society, South Sudanese organization, registered by the Ministry of Justice on 17th November 2010. The organization was initially formed in Khartoum in 1999 and consisted of mostly University students, but its scope broadened after it was established in Juba, Southern Sudan as a separate entity. Presently, CEPO is engaged in the areas of Peace and conflict mitigation, human rights, rule of law, livelihood, governance and democratic transformation. MR. EDMUND YAKANI BERIZILIOUS is the Executive Director of CEPO.”
